Hooray for the Moms and Sisters

Thanks to all of the moms and sisters who agreed to be a part of last night's episode! You were wonderful. We enjoyed getting to see you - and getting to know these designers just a little bit better. The childhood photos were wonderful! Thank you to the sponsors who generously provided the travel arrangements and accomodations for these family members and thank you designers for your genuine heartfelt responses to seeing them. That was the highlight of the night. The tears of joy.

How fun it must be for you to see yourselves featured in Rate The Runway! You all look fabulous. I am wondering if these outfits will get more bids at auction because more people can actually wear them! Omigosh - maybe I could even bid on something! ....checking..... Oh funny!... the measurements on these garments are the same as they have been on all of the auctions. Designed to fit someone 5'10" to 6'2" tall and size 0-2. Well - that leaves me out! Hopefully this info will be updated. Well, probably not since they still have Nazri's name spelled wrong on her bio but I digress...

Can anyone explain to me why the designers couldn't work with their own moms and sisters? That would have made a lot more sense - the model and designer would have been operating more as a team, and the audience could have enjoyed better results. There would have been more fun little conversations between people who love each other. Also, you can bet that the models would have really worked their garments and sworn that they were the best things they had ever worn. Isn't that what we want? Great results? Happy clients? Some fun? Seriously. Can anyone explain?

All of the moms and sisters were so great. Since the first season we have wished for a "real-sized" challenge. Thanks for making it happen. Joan Kors rocked too.

So let's send the moms and sisters some BPR love.

Got it? Good.

Now, let it all out...

... but please, don't criticize the moms/sisters.

More from the Mailbox

I'm adding another Mailbox post because so many of you are mentioning Kathy Najimy on Andy's blog, and the great news that Tim Gunn will be serving as a Fashion Correspondent on NBC's "2006 Emmy Red Carpet Special." Here is the official press release - Thanks Maureen!

"PROJECT RUNWAY'S" TIM GUNN AND "ACCESS HOLLYWOOD'S" MARIA MENOUNOS TO SEE WHAT STARS CAN "MAKE IT WORK" ON NBC'S LIVE "2006 EMMY RED CARPET SPECIAL"

BURBANK, Calif. -- August 22, 2006 -- Tim Gunn, from Bravo's Emmy nominated hit series "Project Runway," will serve as a fashion correspondent on NBC's "2006 Emmy(r) Red Carpet Special," a one-hour event hosted by Billy Bush and Nancy O'Dell ("Access Hollywood"), airing live on Sunday, August 27 (7-8 p.m. ET) preceding the "58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards." Gunn will join Maria Menounos ("Access Hollywood") and together the pair will critique all of this year's Emmy red carpet styles and see what stars are able to "make it work."

Gunn mentors the hot designers on the popular Bravo series "Project Runway" and is also Chair of the Department of Fashion Design at Parsons The New School for Design. For the very first time, Gunn will bring his strong fashion background and savvy eye to the Emmy red carpet as he and Menounos scrutinize all the nominees, presenters and special guests on their styles as they arrive and look for "instant trends."

In addition to the fashion coverage with Gunn and Menounos, special segments will be sprinkled throughout the hour-long, live pre-show, including "Fashion Rewind," a look at past Emmy fashions from the "Access Hollywood" archives.

The "2006 Emmy(r) Red Carpet Special" will be executive produced by Paul Cockerill ("Golden Globes Arrivals") and David Hurwitz ("Fear Factor") from a Room 403 production and Rob Silverstein ("Access Hollywood"). The special will be directed by Bob Levy ("Fox NFL Sunday").

The "58th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards," hosted by Conan O'Brien ("Late Night with Conan O'Brien"), will broadcast live from Los Angeles' historic Shrine Auditorium, Sunday, August 27 (8-11 ET) on NBC.

A Note From Alison Kelly

Due to Alison's schedule, we were unable to conduct our usual "auf'd" interview this week. Alison was kind enough to give us an update on what we can expect to see from her soon:

I've been so busy designing two collections to launch this spring and apologize for neglecting your questions. I am not going to answer each question, just want to talk about my auf and what I am doing now.

I didnt watch the show Wednesday night because I was preparing for my fashion show on the Today Show amongst many other projects...also, don't need to relive it. I was so emotional Thursday, not because of the auffing, but because of the massive amounts of furiously passionate and supportive respsonses I received from my fans.

I am designing an exclusive collection for shopbop.com that we are launching during fashion week where I have collaborated with jewelry designer Rachel Leigh to make gorgeous necklaces and cuffs inspired by vintage charms and keyholes. I have designed a collection of beautiful dresses and jackets which will be available to everyone.

I also ran into Emmett McCarthy and I am going to launch a private collection for his store EMC2 in NoLita for his red carpet event during fashion week, where the one and only Tim Gunn will star.

I feel incredibly lucky to have participated on PR and feel this is an incomparable situation to anything that may have assisted in launching my name and line. Thanks to all for the amazing support and stay tuned as I have many surprises in store.

p.s. you cant believe everything you read in the media, just believe in yourself.

Video - Vincent's Gown for the Oscars

We received this brief video about Vincent Libretti who designed the dress of Leanza Cornett for the 70th Academy Awards. This clip shows her giving him credit for the gown.

(Click on the arrow to view the video.)

We asked Vincent about it and this is what he tells us:

I was asked to make the gown by NBC they actually purchased it from me, in turn LEANZA liked it so much she wound up purchasing it from NBC.

Justin Couture's PR Recap - Episode 6

Back from his vacation we offer up again BPR's guest writer, Justin Couture. We warn you that his recaps contain more than your minimum daily requirement for snark!

Episode 6 or 'Dressed for Stress'

It's a new day at the Atlas and while Michael grooms his already perfection self, I realize that he not only was actually in last week's episode, he WON IT WHILE I WAS AWAY. Newly motivated, he and Robert, wearing manpris, leave their apartment. We hear Vincent ramble on about Bradley and his 401K and In-no-va-tion; I think I might have blacked out a little from his voice because I wake up in a pool of my caramel macchiato feeling strangely refreshed. Alison shows Uli her nearly-empty anti-stress lotion and I really want to know the brand so that I can dash to Sephora and purchase it because I(!) FEEL(!) STRESS! Sorry. But, the lotion isn't sponsored so I'm out of luck. The ladies leave for Parsons ready for a new challenge and I switch to a potentially less stressing pomegranate chai.

At Parsons Heidi walks out in a WTF outfit and I drop my chai because Guy Macy managed once again to dress her in serious head-to-toe fug. Michael not-surprisingly keeps Nazri, who it seems can actually smile(!) and Katie is out. Then Heidi tells them that they've been having it easy lately and for a moment I fear that Guy Macy will step out to dress the remaining designers as the rest of Fleetwood Mac to go along with her homage to Rhiannon (thanks, Project Rungay for that reference). Michael says to the camera that they haven't been easy and Alison says she feels like she's been working for months. Then Robert mentions absurd stress and I want that lotion and my spilled chai and maybe a mani/pedi/massage. Then she tells them that Tim will show them how tough it's going to get tomorrow.

The next morning at the Atlas Tim knocks on the doors of the designers way too early to tell them to get ready and to have no open-toed shoes. When Tim tells this to Vincent for some reason I was imaging Kayne wearing some sort of peek-a-boo slingbacks. Don't ask why. We see scenes of them getting ready including some bad imagery of Vincent's love-handles which causes me more stress. Alison tells Laura "it's a good thing you're wearing your riding outfit in case it's horses" and I find myself a little disappointed in seeing Laura in the same-old breeches/Hermes boots combo. She should have mixed it up with some jodphurs paired with hunt boots because you know she has them.

They get in the van and next thing you know they are in Jersey. While Laura tells us that this part of New Jersey looks bad, Alison mentions humming the theme from the Sopranos and once again I'm back to having theme envy. They pull up at some sort of loading dock and I've a fantasy going on in which they give a group of wayward longshoremen makeovers. But instead this door opens to my worst nightmare ... mountains of trash so I think maybe they are in the home of some obsessive compulsive person that can't throw away a lifetime of TV Guides. Robert doesn't want to work with trash and already I'm worried that the kooky hat potential for Vincent has just gone way up.

Tim, looking strangely hot in a vivid yellow hard hat (I'm kind of getting a Village People vibe from him), tells the designers that they are going to 'source' recycled materials for a garment. After a short speech about garbage (which was the perfect opportunity to refresh my chai so I heard none of it), Tim tells them they have 30 minutes to shove stuff into containers. Michael says that they have to 'think outside the box' so I'm hopeful that Angela won't be sending a frock fashioned out of Lean Cuisine containers with signature rosettes down the runway.

Men Love Project Runway

Here is a note I received from a friend:

Watched the program last night. I was disappointed in the one they threw out. The weird guy with the glasses and the funky dress that she couldn't walk in should have gone. Laura sure liked the one they let go. I think she looked at her as almost a daughter plus her dislike for the guy with the black rimmed glasses. (As you can see I have all the names down pat.) The guy with the tattoos did a great job and probably should have won. I liked his outfit better than Michael.

Not that I watch this program.

buddy

Episode Seven Speculation

Check out the preview video on Bravo and consider what the next challenge could be. We have already had suggestions that it could be Martha Stewart because of the "everyday" hint. Another suggestion is Rachel Ray. Is it someone's mom? What do you think?

ETA: This is a photo of Heidi's mom - sorry I couldn't find a better one. So many of you were suggesting her that I thought I would post a photo. Hmmmm....

Daniel Franco at Fashion Week!

Here is a note from Daniel Franco:

Dear BPR,

Yes it's true. yes it's official. Integrity wins in the end! "Following Bliss" is right on for when we DO follow our bliss, good fortune follows us too. Sing-a-long time! Daniel Franco where did you go? Daniel Franco where did you go- oh? New York Fashion Week at Stylelounge, sponsored by Nikon USA for a one man show - oh! When? September 11th, 2006 at 3pm will be the moment. What's my direction? You know I have a fatal fetish for hyper quality and sleek tailoring, but it's all now being filtered through this vibe:

"The fact of global warming is a call to action from designers to re-imagine luxury for this 'new-warmer-now'. We must re-evaluate garment construction, (ie. removing ALL excess weight) fabric selection (Purely natural fibers only) and styling (dramatic breezy cuts for evening and the tailored goods should be sleek, modern and smart)."
Daniel Franco

So please wish me your best, as I only respond to the best in everything. I am thrilled, nervous, ecstatic, euphoric, inspired, afraid, and blissy all day long and will be for the next 3 weeks. This is the next phase to my career. I fell in Season 2 to rise again here and now, so thank you for your continued support and your beautiful attention, BPR.

And to Alison, or any other designer that fell in the 3 seasons, remember life continues and all things come to fruition in the right time. Knowing it's alright makes it right. So 'Shine on you crazy diamonds'... and do what ya gots ta do! Let it all be known in your craft and in your passion. Create create create!

Till we meet again,

df

First, here is the EW interview with Alison. Thanks to ALL who sent the link. This article mentions celebrities have discovered Uli Herzner's designs. Yay - go Uli! Thanks Marie & Jeremy.

A couple of our readers have written to Tresemme to ask about Michael being featured in the ad along with Nazri. Here is the first response to Allison: (BPR reader Daniel received a similar response.)

Hi Allison,

I received your message regarding the Icon Challenge ad. The TRESemme ad is actually a two page spread. One page is product focused (the one you're referring to), and the other page features Michael and Nazri. However, as the prize announcement indicated, that feature won't be shown until it runs in Elle's October issue. That said, I've seen the ad, and it definitely covers Michael and Nazri and shows the fabulous outfit. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Thanks much,
Amanda

Tim’s Podcast, Episode 6

Hi, I’m Tim Gunn, and this is my Podcast for Episode 6. Heidi, in her delivery of this challenge, doesn’t really set it up with any kind of detail. Or even broad stroke for that matter. She says to the designers “things are going to get a lot tougher.” I even believe she says “you’ve had it pretty easy up 'til now” – there’s a look of shock on all the designers’ faces – “we’ve had it easy until now? What’s going to happen?”

Season Three Progress Report

We have seen five episodes of season three. Five challenges, five winners and six departed designers. What has been great about this season? What do you love and enjoy? What have been your favorite moments? What don't you like? What worries you? What keeps you watching? What is the best thing about Project Runway? If you had to give this season a grade and it was progress report time, what grade would you give it?

I'll start. Okay, one thing that I like about this season is that we have five different winners. I might not have agreed with every choice (I think the first one should have gone to Robert) but at least they are recognizing different designers. Also, the talent and skill here is remarkable. I am amazed at the ability of these designers to create these outfits from scratch in such a short time.

One thing I don't like is that several of the contestants were obviously out of their league. It saddens me to think of all of the people who tried out for the show and didn't make it when these did. I almost think there should be a "qualifying exam" where the entrants must demonstrate knowledge of the industrial machines used at Parsons. What chance do they have if they don't know the machines? Really?

I have three favorite moments: The first was Kayne's win, the second was Tim arriving with the dogs and the third, of course, was Michael's win.

Altogether I think it has been a great season so far and it is only going to get better. As the field narrows we will be able to see more from each designer. I don't like the sabotage and bickering - unless it's really witty... :)

Attention Atlanta! Want to watch Project Runway with a fun group of fans? Check out Mary's in East Atlanta Village and say hi to DJ Jarod Jones for us!

I host a Project Runway night here in Atlanta at the bar where I dj - because I wasn’t going to let my djing gig get in the way of Project Runway, was I? ...It’s a pretty fun night; during the commercial breaks, I open the mic and let people around the bar give their commentary.

Of course, we’ve all been cheering Michael Knight hardcore. Not only is he from Atlanta, but his designs are GOOD. I think he’s been grossly underrated thus far. He shot out of the gate since day one with that radical coffee filter dress. He should have won instantly, that’s how I feel. And last week, having Pam Grier as a fashion icon? AMAZING. For an hour last Wednesday night, the world was a better place.

I was happy to run across your blog, and I’ll continue to check for updates here. Excuse me – the BEST updates.

Thanks guys.

BPR Interview With Bradley Baumkirchner

We continue our series of interviews of the auf'd contestants this week with the lovable Bradley Baumkirchner. His quirky sense of humor and humble manners won him an adoring fan base. His personality certainly shines through in our interview!

BPR: Hey Bradley, we were sad to see you go. So what was the reaction from your family and friends about your auffing?

Bradley: Goodbyes are always hard.

BPR: When did you know you wanted to grow up and become a fashion designer?

Bradley: 66, seriously- since I was a young child I was interested in clothes. I was thinking around the age of 9 I wanted to make films and actually did, but as it ended up my heart is with fashion now.

BPR: We loved your audition video. When you’re out on the dance floor, are we more likely to see “The Chicken”, “The Shaman”, “The No-dancin” or the “The Running Backwards”?

Bradley: Last night there was a ton of that going on, I love to dance!

We Aim To Please!

Click here for the "Time of Your Life" video (Sorry the exact title escapes me...) and revisit the season two cast. Awwwwww....

Also, those of you who have noted that Elle McPherson is the original "The Body" are not the only ones to object to Heidi's latest campaign. Check this out. But seriously - a "Battle of the Supermodels?" That sounds like a promoter's dream - for Elle AND Heidi.
Thanks Michelle.

Season Three Hopeful Update #2 - Elier Aubret

I had several notes from Elier before and after the Miss Universe Pageant. Anyone who "watched" with us knows that Elier was the one who originally wrote to let us know that Santino Rice was going to be a judge. Also, Elier attended the event in support of Miss Puerto Rico!

Hi Laura!

Just to say hello and to keep you up to date...

It was a PR night!!!

1st: Santino Rice as a judge..
2nd: Nick's dress for Miss Nancy
3rd: Miss USA's dress
4th: Carlos Ponce... puertorrican hotty! (just something nice)
5th: Miss Puerto Rico WON....

PR was written all over the place even the country that won has a P R !!!!

I read all the comments and I know you guys were confused about me and the misses...
Well yes I went to the Miss Universe Pageant as a friend and in business, why ? , Well I know her because we worked before on shows and here in Puerto Rico they give the chance to new designers to dress her for the pageant. All the dresses she wore during her stay were given to her by local designers. Remember Cassanova? the other Puertorrican designer? [We also met Carlos Casanova in the audition line!] He designed the dress Miss PR used on Late Show with David Letterman. Well I was there to support her and be a fan.

The other Miss is Thebyam Carrion, she was the one that's in the picture from the NY casting, I will be going with her all the way to Poland in Sep, the pageant will be the 30th of that same month. She was my muse and will look fab at the pageant, she's a great girl and I wish her the best!... But anyway, I am still working hard on my designs and new collection, I don't know if you know but every year I present my collection as a benefit for my Foundation, The Black & White Foundation. All the profits go to special education students in poor areas of the island. So I've been very busy sewing, flying, and in meetings for my benefit...

Well, I'm still making it work... from Puerto Rico!

Take care!
and I'm looking forward to meeting you guys again, and to trying again for the next season...

Just Can't Get Enough!

Click here for Daniel Franco's highlights on Ring My Bell.

Make a special note of that voice asking DF if he is single.... Who could it be?
Thank you Steven and Cloudboy.

Meanwhile, click here for the "Runway Rejects." These are the bio videos from some of the unchosen designers. They look like a great bunch. But obviously there is a wide range of real ability here - even to my untrained eye.... What do you think?

Recapalooza!

In true Project Runway fashion, we are changing the rules on the fly. This week - everyone makes the front page!

Two late additions: Naturally Blonde and TwoP!

Michael Knight takes the lead at The Lipstick Mystic...

Moi; loves Hot Pants!

Schnaufblog recaps just make you smarter...

The Quiet One thinks Heidi's pants are on fire...

The Beauty Addict Mag pros all agree with the judges this week...

Elisa was not feeling the love...

What do you call the color of Kayne's hair?

And here's more! Chelsea, and quacking Sam and A Socialite's Life and Jesse.

Please don't forget to give some love to all of our early recappers. Justin Couture fans will be disappointed, his tells us that his schedule does not allow a recap this week. Never fear, he should be back for Episode 6!

Here on BPR we have an irrational appreciation for Daniel Franco. Is there a medication for this?

This is the Work of Someone...

And don't forget this.

Office Project Runway - Clothes off Your Desk

Hi there! My name is Kim, and I am a HUGE fan of your website and of course, Project Runway. I work at Imagine Television, and a couple of us here in the department are obsessive about the show. Basically if you don't watch the show the night it airs someone will spoil it for you because it's all we talk about Thursday
morning.

My former co-worker Sara recently left our company and had her birthday in the same week. The celebrate the events, we decided to create an 'Office Project Runway'. We made a challenge memo and handed it out to everyone in the office (I copied and pasted the challenge below). It was a great time, and it was amazing to see what the different people came up with (I think we had around 8 designers in all, and a handful more modeled outfits.) My friend Sara has the photos on a shutterfly account if you'd like to see the pictures we took. Just wanted to share our love for Project Runway with other people who I know love the show just as much. Thanks for your time, and keep up the amazing website! :)

CHALLENGE #26: “CLOTHES OFF YOUR DESK”

DESIGNERS –

In celebration of Sara’s birthday, your next challenge is to design a fashionable garment (shirt, hat, pants, etc.) inspired by Imagine Television (Entertainment). You will only be allowed to use supplies from the office (garbage bags, folders, markers, tape, etc.)

The time constraint for this challenge is ONE HOUR (1:00-2:00pm, or any other hour period you have available.)

Your garment will be modeled and presented during Sara’s wine and cheese birthday (sometime this afternoon.) You may model the garment yourself OR have another Imagine employee model your garment.

Judges will be scoring the garments on: innovation, construction, presentation, and Imagine inspiration and determine who will be IN and who will be OUT!

WE WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO PARTICIPATE IN CELEBRATION OF SARA’S BIRTHDAY.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Nick Verreos in San Diego on Sunday!

Hi Laura,

Just wanted to keep you in the loop. I will be in San Diego this weekend for an event called PROJECT FASHION. It will be held at a great mall called The Shop At Las Americas. They will have a fashion show with clothing provided by students from Fashion Careers College (and maybe the mall stores too?) and it looks like they are giving away some great prizes including at trip for two to the PR3 Finale in New York!!!

If you could please let all BeePeRs know I would really appreciate it. Can you believe the popularity of Season 3?! It's been fun to watch and I've been having a great time writing my reviews for People.com., plus it has been nothing but a positive for me. I've been busier than ever and have some great projects in the works! I'll let you know when they happen!
All my best to you and your family!

Nick

Tim's Saturn

Dear Tim,

You look great in the Saturn Sky Roadster. Is it really yours? You certainly deserve it!

You're so sweet, but no, that was not my Saturn. I should probably add, "thankfully." If I owned a car, I would be it's slave. I can't afford to put it in a garage, and the moving-it-every-other-day would drive me to despair. Also, it's such a sexy and sporty little thing that it's crying out, "Beat me, scar me!" And somebody would.

Transcript of Tim's Podcast - Click Here!

Bettie Bloodshed has finished the transcription of Tim's podcast for Episode 5: "Iconic Statement". The BeePeRs really appreciate this service. Thanks Bettie!

Congratulations Nazri!

We've sent our love and congratulations to Michael - now about giving it up for Nazri! I can easily see Michael making it through to Fashion Week and Nazri modeling his final look - can't you?
Here is a link to more from Tresemme. Recognize anyone else?

Thanks floretbroccoli and Rachel.

From The Mailbox

Newsweek has a Q&A up with Diane von Furstenberg where the reporter asks the incredulous question, "Do you watch 'Project Runway' on Bravo?" Thanks Kate.

Have you seen Katherine Gerdes' take on the INC challenge? We really admire Katy's tenacity and spirit. Oh, she's looking for suggestions on what celebrity fashion icon to use for the next challenge. Give her some suggestions! Thanks Sophie.
